learning together on the land

learning together on the landlearning together on the land

We are working on the following specific calls to action (Truth and Reconciliation Commission, 2015) in the following ways:

  • partnering with Indigenous organizations like Crow Shield Lodge and other individual Indigenous educators to co-lead our programs in a two-eyed seeing / two row wampum approach
  • granting tuition to Indigenous families in our programs
  • offering transportation to Indigenous families in our programs
  • crafting our "curriculum" to centre Indigenous teachings, in consultation with our partners, like Seven Grandfather/Sacred Teachings, wampum teachings, Indigenous literature
  • promoting teachings that are understood as "pan-Indigenous" (not just in North America), like respect for all beings, reciprocity, interconnectedness of all, wholistic (mind, body, spirit, emotions) education, honourable harvest
  • getting to know the stories of the land - particularly the land that is called Huron Natural Area in Kitchener
  • teaching about truth and reconciliation, honouring and celebrating Indigenous contributions to this land
  • offering teacher workshops with Indigenous educators

#12

We call upon the federal, provincial, territorial, and Aboriginal governments to develop culturally appropriate early childhood education programs for Aboriginal families..

#62i

We call upon the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, in consultation and collaboration with Survivors, Aboriginal peoples, and educators, to:

  1. Make age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for Kindergarten to Grade Twelve students.

#63

We call upon the Council of Ministers of Education Canada to maintain an annual commitment to Aboriginal education issues, including:

  • Developing and implementing Kindergarten to Grade Twelve curriculum and learning resources on Aboriginal peoples in Canadian history, and the history and legacy of residential schools.
  • Sharing information and best practices on teaching curriculum related to residential schools and Aboriginal history.
  • Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.
  • Identifying teacher-training needs relating to the above.
