Looking for land-based, Indigenous led programs at your school? These unique programs invite students to deepen their connection to land through storytelling and engaging, hands-on activities.
This one hour workshop invites students to explore the beauty of Métis culture and the spirit of gratitude through story, play, and action. Featuring The Giving Tree by Leah Dorion, students will learn about traditional teachings of reciprocity and respect for the land and others. Through Métis games, hands-on activities, and a traditional song of thanks, this workshop inspires a deeper connection to the land and the land's many gifts. This workshop is co-led by a Métis facilitator.
"Our students loved the story and games. The Giving Tree workshop helped them understand about being thankful to the land, and only taking what you need." ~ Jenny Soehner, WRDSB
"My students really connected with being outdoors and actually experiencing Indigenous culture, not just hearing about it (like the circle we made, seeing the plants and hearing how they are used, learning to say thank you in several Indigenous languages)." Katrina Martin, WRDSB
"It is so important for students to have this kind of hands-on experience to learn about Indigenous peoples, not only so that they develop an understanding of the Metis's way of life, but also to gain an understanding of what each one of us can do to show respect for each other and for the environment." ~ Jody House, WRDSB
"The power of the outdoors is incredible. Being connected to nature and to each other is so important. My students loved the hands on activities offered through the station rotations outside. They were engaging and timed so well to keep kids busy and learning! The Giving Tree story was new to me and I really enjoyed it. Many reflections in our community circle afterwards focused on our new learning, giving back to the Earth, ways that humans take from the Earth without even thinking. It is clear you have both worked with kids before. You are both very engaging and understand how to keep our youngest learners involved." ~ Lindsay O'Donaghue, WRDSB
What I loved about this workshop was how it invited us to slow down and listen to the land, to each other, and to the teachings shared. It felt like a meaningful experience, not just a lesson. The hands-on elements and storytelling made it accessible and memorable for everyone. Angie’s storytelling and the puppets made it feel fun and deeply connecting. The tactile experiences supported all types of learners. A sense of reciprocity was present throughout the experience.
This workshop was important for our school because it helped us deepen our connection to the land and offered students a respectful, age-appropriate way to learn about the Métis.
We recommend this workshop to others because it’s heartfelt, thoughtful, and brings people together in a meaningful way. It’s the kind of learning that stays with you. We truly enjoyed this experience and look forward to more with Nature Connect and Angie. ~ Crystal Noseworthy, WRDSB
